Community members that are interested in running for office can find information below about the qualifications and requirements for city commission. Residents can also get involved locally by serving on a board or committee.

St. Johns City Commission

Elections for the St. Johns City Commission are held in every even year. City Commissioners serve staggered four-year terms.

2024 Election Deadlines: 

  • Deadline to file for office is TUESDAY, APRIL 23, 2024 by 4:00 p.m. in the City Clerk’s Office. (State statute)
  • Filing requirements:
    • Nominating petitions
    • Affidavit of Identity
    • Per city charter, “Members of the City Commission shall have been residents of the city for a term of at least two years immediately prior to their election or appointment, and have the qualifications of electors therein.”
  • Instructions for properly completing the petition are on the back of each petition. A copy of “Circulating and Canvassing City/Township Petition Forms” will also be provided to you.
  • Petition Signature Requirements are “Charter based”. There should be between fifty and seventy-five signatures of City of St. Johns’ registered voters on the petitions (City Charter).
  • Withdrawal deadline elapses on April 26, 2024 no later than 4:00 p.m. (State statute)

*PRIMARY ELECTION: August 6, 2024

GENERAL ELECTION: November 5, 2024

TERM OF OFFICE: 4 years

*Note: This office may not appear on the primary election ballot.  In the event that there are seven or more candidates, this office will be on the primary election ballot on August 6, 2024.

Procedure

Submit properly completed petitions containing at least 50 valid signatures but no more than 75; and submit a completed Affidavit of Identity to the Clerk's office. Petition forms and the affidavit are available from the City Clerk's Office at City Hall during business hours.
