Auxiliary Officer
Qualification Requirements
Each candidate, to be a member of the Auxiliary Division shall be at least 18 years of age, have a good character and reputation. They must also have a high school diploma, or GED, and a valid Michigan driver's license. The candidate must be a U.S. citizen, reside within 20 miles of the City of St Johns and be free of any criminal violations. Candidates must be free of any disabilities that would prevent functioning in any capacity required of a regular officer. Upon conditional offer of appointment all candidates are required to submit to a drug test.
Upon completion of the application for Auxiliary Officer it will be forwarded to the Lieutenant. After a background check has been completed, the Lieutenant will present them to the Chief for approval.
All Auxiliary Officers are deemed at-will employees serving at the pleasure and discretion of the Chief of Police.
Powers of Auxiliary Officers
Auxiliary Officers possess only those powers granted private citizens under Michigan law. They may take enforcement type action only when working under the direct supervision of an MCOLES (Michigan Commission of Law Enforcement Standards) certified police officer.
Auxiliary Officers shall be subjected to all laws and regulations that are applicable under the State of Michigan and City of St. Johns ordinances.
Auxiliary Officers shall exercise only the power and authority of a civilian.
